Valley Art Center's Art Therapy Opportunities

The Valley Art Center now offers in person art therapy group and individual sessions to the Northeast Ohio area.

Art therapy is using art in a therapeutic way to support overall wellbeing and building an understanding of yourself. Art therapy is about the process of creating art, not creating a perfect masterpiece, which opens the door for ANYONE to be an artist. The benefits of art therapy include, but are not limited to, growth in emotional expression and understanding, social skills, self-awareness, and identity exploration.

A wide range of media is used in the VAC Art Therapy program: Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Papermaking, Weaving, Sculpture, and more.
Our art therapist, Yesamine De León-Mettee, MA, AT, LPC, has a Master of Counseling and Art Therapy from Ursuline College and is a licensed professional counselor. She will lead all group and individual sessions at this time.

For more information, please visit valleyartcenter.org, call the office at 440-247-7507, or contact Yesamine De León-Mettee, MA, AT, LPC directly at arttherapy@valleyartcenter.org. Financial assistance may be available to those who qualify.

Workshops

Adult Workshops, Tuesdays, 4pm-5pm

July 5th: Safe Place Guided Meditation
Sometimes we need a place to feel relaxed and let our minds rest, through this workshop we can begin to find that place for ourselves. This expressive arts workshop will allow you to explore guided meditation with an art therapist as she walks you through your calm place. Afterwards, we will all create this calm place in a painting as a physical reminder of where we can go when we need a moment to ourselves. This is not an art therapy group, but a group meant for expression and relaxation through art. No art experience is necessary, and all supplies will be provided.

July 12th: Inside/Outside Mask
In this expressive art workshop, we will be creating an Inside Outside Mask, which is what we feel and think on the inside and what we show to others on the outside. We will be using premade paper masks, paint, drawing, and collage materials to create these masks of ourselves. We will have fun creating the art, connecting with others, and ourselves.

July 19th: Calm Through Weaving
In this expressive art workshop, we will be creating weavings using different colored yarns and ribbons while practicing finding a calm moment for ourselves through the weaving. We will practice mindful breathing and connecting to our senses when we need a calm moment through this workshop. We will have fun connecting with others and creating a relaxing safe space for each other.

July 26th: Mystical Brush-o Trees
In this expressive art workshop, we will be drawing ourselves as trees. These trees are unique though as we will be using Brush-o, a powder form of watercolor which creates explosions of color to build up the leaves of our tree. We will draw our trees using sharpies and then use the Brush-o to finish our trees. We will have fun experiencing a new art medium, connecting with others, and ourselves.

August 2nd: Comfort Boxes
In this expressive art workshop, we will be using small paper boxes to create a comfort or self-care box. We will use a wide range of different media from paint to collage to drawing to create these boxes. The boxes will hold reminders of what brings us comfort or how we practice self-care through written, drawn, or small 3-D reminders. We will have fun connecting with others, ourselves, and finding a moment of relaxation and fun.

Adolescent Workshops, Ages 12-17, Tuesdays, 12:30pm-1:30pm

July 5th: Wabi Sabi
In this expressive art workshop, we will be creating paper Wabi Sabi mugs. Wabi Sabi is the Japanese ceramic process of breaking a piece of pottery and putting it back together with gold in all the cracks. It is often used as a metaphor for the beauty in imperfection. We will have fun recreating this technique in paper form, connecting with others, and finding the beauty of imperfection in our own art.

August 2nd: Origami Creatures
In this expressive art workshop, we will start off by creating origami butterflies and move on to different fun creatures. We will use markers and colored pencils to decorate our origami paper and then transform it into a butterfly. In this workshop we will practice mindfulness through art making, finding calm, and connecting with others as we learn something new.

Kid Workshops, Ages 4-6, Tuesdays, 2pm-3pm

July 12th: Superhero Self
Does your child have a favorite superhero? Have they ever thought about what kind of superhero they would be? In this expressive art workshop kiddos will be creating themselves as superheroes! We will use painting, drawing, and collage materials to create our superhero selves. We will have fun connecting with others, making art to build confidence, and playing a game

July 26th: Sensory Collage
In this expressive art workshop kids will be creating a collage using all sorts of materials from cardboard to fuzzy fabric to sequins that flips to change color. In making their sensory collage we will be practicing connecting with our senses when we need to feel calm in our bodies. Kids will have fun making art, practicing mindfulness, playing a game, and making new friends.
