Understanding Art

We will meet at the main coatroom in the Cleveland Museum of Art to visit selected artworks, and then see critically, formulate questions, analyze and discuss those works. The primary objective will be to develop skills in critiquing art, thus enhancing our appreciation for great art. A secondary objective (for those of us who are artists) will be to understand how to critique our own art. We will spend about two hours as a group in the museum, talk about selected works, then (optionally) adjourn for dinner and continued discussion at a predetermined location. Students will be given information when they register to help them understand how to look at and formulate opinions about works of art. These sessions will be limited to a minimum of four and a maximum of twelve students.

Nature Shoot

Photographing Architecture

Beginning Weaving on the Loom

Make a reservation through the Valley Art Center. $90 for six one-hour individual sessions with instructor Elaine Levin. This class is designed for beginner level weaving on a 4 harness loom. Elaine is an accomplished weaver and member of Cuyahoga Weaver’s Guild. She studied under Dorothy Gregg. Learn to create a scarf or placemats. Learn part of the loom and terminology, warping and tensioning, project design and finishing techniques. Basic yarn is included. Bring a notebook. The class is held in Studio 9 at Hamlet Hillside Apartments. The instructor will arrange a class that is convenient for you.

Lampworking - Beginning to Advanced

All materials, supplies, use of tools, and equipment are provided. Students need to bring a sack lunch & beverage, note taking materials, an open mind and enthusiasm. Please wear cotton clothing and closed toe and heel shoes. Classes may be scheduled Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays with advance notice. My studio is located in Auburn Township,  just 15 minutes from downtown Chagrin Falls. Directions are provided as necessary.

Beginning Lampworking • Dive into the world of glass beads! Experiment with molten glass by learning basic lampworking skills in a fun relaxing environment. Class focus will be on mandrel wound beads and designs.

Intermediate to Advanced Lampworking • Students may select what they want to learn. Choose from sculptural techniques, marbles, complex lattacinos, enamels, dichroic glass or metal inclusions. The possibilities are infinite.

Fusing - Beginning to Advanced

This workshop will cover the basics of fusing flat glass. Among subjects discussed will be different glass types, compatibility, annealing, fusing with non-glass items. Students will be limited to a 4”x4” or smaller format, great for tiles or jewelry.

Course #1919    •  Nov. 6  •  10-12pm •  Ages 7-10  •  $20 Do you love to draw animals?  Do you sometimes think they are too difficult to draw?  Come and find out how easy it can be.  By focusing on geometric shapes as simple as ovals and triangles, students will learn to draw their favorite animals.

Bookmaking

Students will learn how to attach the pages and the cover. Covers will be designed using collage with wallpaper and other materials. The student will take home 2 different styles of books that could be given as gifts!  Make great sketchbooks or journals.

Silk Painting Workshop

Ages 10 and up (Children under 12 must have an adult present during the entire class.) Try something different! Create a beautiful piece of wearable art for that special outfit or a unique gift. These informative and fun classes are open to all ages and skill levels. You will choose and paint one of 5 different 12” x 60” silk scarves, or one 30” x 30” China silk scarf. Learn the silk painting process, from stretching silk, applying silk dyes, resist techniques, and more. Your scarf will be steamed before the end of class to take home. Wear old clothes, comfortable shoes, and bring a bag lunch. When registering, choose which size scarf you’d like to create your unique masterpiece.

Advanced registration only (space is limited) Drop off children in the Valley Art Center parking lot.  Children grades 1 - 6 have the opportunity to create unique gifts for their families and friends with members of our faculty and fine area artists.  Children make projects in several work stations creating lasting gifts for great memories.

Animal Totem Workshop for All Ages

Using native American teachings, we will explore the connection between humans and animals.  Each of us has one or more animal totems that are meaningful to us.  This workshop will help you identify your corresponsing animal and allow time for creating a totem charm to use when seeking to connect with it.

Luminaries

Be ready for Halloween and the winter holidays with your own luminary created from clay.  Explore different ways to contain candles and cast their light to warm up those fall and winter evenings.  Design a jack o’lantern, haunted house, a holday tree, or outside candle holder for your festivals of light.

Haunted House Workshop

Let your imaginations soar!  Create a clay haunted house that can be used as a cookie jar or altered to become a luminary! This is a two-part workshop.  Come and build your creation the first week, then it will be fired and you can paint it during the next class all in time for Halloween!
